Glass Fibre; from dream to reality
The Dutch broadband network dilemma
How on earth is it possible that there are so
many people in the Netherlands who cannot wait to enjoy glass fibre; that there
are so many authorities who want to promote the installation of a broadband
network; that there are so many financiers who are convinced of the growth of
digital services and that there are so many providers keen on hitting the
digital highway …. and yet it is so hard to realize a broadband network. How on
earth is that possible?
It is called the classical “the chicken or the egg”
story. The providers waiting for a sufficiently large network with enough
subscribers and the cable operators not wanting to install a glass fibre
network until there are sufficiently promising services. That is why we have
been waiting for each other for a number of years now, while the world keeps on
turning. Goodwill all over, but the broadband network dream is only seldom becoming
reality. That is what Close the Gap defines as being the Dutch broadband
network dilemma.
